Tanning Information!

EVERYONE likes to have a healthy looking tan, but for some people a natural tan just isn't possible because of sun allergies, a lack of time to sun bath, not living in an area where good sunshine is available and with scare stories in the media about various types of skin cancer due to excessive sun exposure, so having a spray-on tan is very appealing. The colour of one spray tan session is similar to about 10 sun bed sessions but without the danger of being over exposed to the UV rays of the sun.

How Does Spray Tanning Work?

The active ingredients in the Fake Bake spray-on tan (sometimes called a sunless tan) are chemicals called Dihydroxyacetone (DHA)and Erythrulose. These chemicals react with the amino acids on the outer layer of skin which changes it's colour. The colour change starts within an hour of the tanning application and continues for a further 10 - 12 hours. Depending on your skin type, a spray tan will normally last between 5 to 8 days but will start fading after about 3 days as the upper layers of your skin rub off and fall naturally. The tan can be maintained for as long as you need it with additional tanning sessions.

Is a Spray Tan Safe?

DHA has been used in cosmetics for about 30 years and has been declared safe by the US food and drug administration for use in cosmetics used to colour the skin. The chemical is a colourless 3-carbon sugar often found in sugar beet and sugar cane. Erythrulose is a red and sour tart sugar found in red berries such as raspberrys. These chemicals are not absorbed into the body and are non-toxic. However I would always recommend seeking doctors advice if you have any medical concerns. If you haven't had a spray tan before, you may want to have a patch test done to ensure that you do not have any allergies with the tanning solution. Although allergies are very rare we would recommend this and we can perform this for you free of charge.

What Should I do Before a Spray Tanning Session?

The key to getting great results from any spray tanning system is to prepare your skin and give the solution ample time to develop evenly over the skin. Please go to the preparation page for a list of do's and don'ts for the tanning session.
